A New Door Opens

My most astute blog-followers have probably noticed the previously un-remarked upon countdown that has appeared to the right. My even more astute blog-followers have probably figured out that it’s counting down to my imminent return to the good ol’ U S of A.

That’s right, folks, I’m headed home!

It was an excruciatingly difficult decision for me. If you ask any of my closest confidants, they’ll tell you that it was pretty much eating away at me for several weeks. You see, I decided that it would be pretty much necessary for me to be home for Christmas in order to not die of sadness. I’ve been missing my family, friends, and home so much, that I knew I wouldn’t be able to continue to have a productive experience here without at least seeing my family for a week or two over the holidays. But then I needed to decide how soon before Christmas I’d return home, and how long I’d stay at home. In the end, I decided to go home at the beginning of December and stay home for the foreseeable future. Amazingly, I’ve managed to secure a job (at least temporarily). And I’ve also decided to apply to grad school. So that’s what I’ll be doing with my life when I get back to NY. (I’m actually really excited to apply to Columbia Teachers College’s TESOL program! P.S. I’m currently taking any and all advice on how to write a statement of purpose aka personal statement for my application…)

So it’s with a moderately heavy heart that I list out the things that I will miss and not miss once I get back to NY.

Things I’ll miss about Peru (in no particular order):

Hmm, 60% of those are food-related… no wonder I’ve gained a few el bees ;)

Things I will not miss about Peru:

This actually just happened...

Student 1: Miss, what is a parachute?

Me: [explains the meaning of "parachute"]

Student 2: Isn't that a state...like in the United States?

Me: Uhhh. No... [thinks about states that sound anything like "parachute"] Do you mean Massachusetts?

Student 2: Ahhhhh, yes.
